We currently have 14 hairstylists, 5 make up artists and 15 photographers plus several volunteers.

Give Abused Children a Voice! (Mat-Su Borough)

Give abused children a voice. Become a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA)! No experience necessary and you only need a few hours a month.

What is a CASA?

Court Appointed Special Advocates are community volunteers trained by the Office of Public Advocacy (OPA) to speak up for abused and neglected children in court and to advocate for what is in their best interests. With the information provided by the CASA volunteers, judges are able to make more informed decisions as to what is best for the child and team members can make better decisions about placement, educational and social needs.

Who can be a CASA?

CASA volunteers are ordinary people who care about kids. CASA volunteers come from all backgrounds. Many work full time although some are students or retired people. Training is required but no legal expertise, special experience or education is necessary. CASA volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and undergo a careful screening process.

Volunteers must be willing to commit to stay with their case until it is resolved. Once accepted, volunteers are trained in courtroom procedures, social services, the child welfare system and the special needs of children who have been abused and neglected. All CASA volunteers are supervised by OPA guardians ad litem.

The Valley CASA Program is actively recruiting for volunteers in the Wasilla, Palmer, Sutton, Big Lake, Houston, Talkeetna and Willow areas.

Next training begins in March!

Informational meetings are held the first Monday of every month at the MTA building in Palmer and the last Monday of every month at the AT&T Sports Center in Wasilla. All meetings are from 5:30 to 6:30 (open house style, come anytime).

For more info, please call Jamey Duhamel at 775-2978 or use the reply-to email address.

Anchorage Animal Care & Control Budget Cut (Anchorage, AK)

Good evening everyone,
On November 30th, the assembly is having a special meeting and 3rd public Testimony on the budget at the library @ 5:00pm.
The Anchorage Animal Care & Control needs your support and your public comment.
The city wants to cut a total of $146,000.00 dollars from your shelters budget for 2010 which is 13%.

AACCC is the only municipality shelter from Ekultna to Portage, and with the purposed cuts will impact the public, and I believe public safety also.

These are the cuts they want to make.

This is what is being cut

Enforcement Staffing ((by the national standards on the amount of calls and our coverage area from Portage to Ekultena we should have 17 Officers, but we only have 7. This will delay response times, and increase customer complaints and could result in other legalities.

Equipment (Cat Traps, if they are broken or stolen none will be replaced) *** Which can result in more human bites from Feral animals that would normally be caught in the traps.
If the traps though are lost and stolen, then what is happening to the $80.00 deposit we charge the public when taking the traps for trapping animals?

Enforcement Support to include answering services ((If the answering services go away these calls will not be answered. And if they want to be answered shouldn’t we need to employ more dispatchers instead of the 1.5 we have now?

A portion of the animal cruelty investigations reimbursements.
((( Why would we get rid of this )))

Please Please please come… I will be there to speak, but the more that speak on this the better.

Please show your concerns. Now wouldn’t this be a total set back with the budget cuts when we are trying to have our own spay clinic built?

If we have this built, then we wouldn’t require a deposit of 80.00, and then we wouldn’t have to follow up on NOV (Notice of Violations, then we wouldn’t have to pay an OUTSIDE collection agency to collect the money that wasn’t paid by the violation. Now think about it. What a WASTE

Also did you know, for each member that is on a board of commissions (Volunteer) and we are talking about thousands of people with in this city on these boards. Get $20.00 per each meeting paid by the city? You can fill out a Waiver, and yes I filled one out. But I want to know on how many of these boards are receiving this money.
This is per the Muni code 4.05.50 Compensation of members. At this time there are 70 different boards, with an average of 9 members. If each of those members get paid per each meeting 12 x 630 for 70 boards that is a total of $151,200.00 dollars
Now doesn't that take more time to put them on the payroll, process the taxes, and keep up on it all? On a volunteer position this should not be compensated at all, we volunteer to receive the enjoyments of our cause IE the animals, and finding them good homes.

Please come speak your personal option on this, or show up so when it's my turn to speak I can ask all the animal owners & animal lovers to stand. I want the Assembly and the Mayor to show on what an impact this would be for these cuts.

Any questions on this please email me, I don't mind answering any questions you may have on this.

Thank you so much

This is the time for family reunion and visits to friends and relatives. However, in the orphanages, children do not have enough to prepare for their holiday. Most of them stay in the orphanage or centers over the Tet, only some of them go back to their home villages. Last year through the kindness of others who donated turkeys, hams and other goods my sons and I was able to open our home again to share a holiday dinner with new and old friends who was alone, shut in, or just a little down right now financially. This year has been a particularly difficult year for myself, so I am looking forward to forgetting my woes for now and try to do what I can to put a smile on someone else's face. So if you have any unwanted turkeys or hams, can goods, or any other Thanksgiving related items you would like to donate I/we would be grateful for your generosity.

Volunteer/Apprentice
Valley Winery is looking for an apprentice who would like to learn the finer points of Vinification (Wine making), Brewing, and Business. We're a small scale local brew supply shop that runs on a tight budget and is hoping to spread interest in home brewing in the valley. Hours are part time, and flexible, and will be approximately 80% spent on learning the processes, terminology, equipment, and chemistry behind the brewing process. A positive side aspect will be learning the ins and outs of running a small business/ entrepenuership with valuable hands on exprience in time and task management.

This is a low pressure, highly educational experience. Only prerequiset is an enthusiastic interest in the art, and willingness to learn.

An ideal candidate will have experience in management, customer service, sales, and home brewing/ fermenting; but even if you are lacking these prior experiences, you'll have them before we're through.
Naturally this possition comes with certain perks like picking your schedule, at cost brew supplies, and enjoying a fun and no stress hobby close to home.
We didn't vote for it, but your government says you must be 21 to enjoy this experience.
Thank you for your interest.

DeWall Ph.D.) that lasts about 25 minutes and I would appreciate if you could help me by filling it out. The survey is searching for feedback about a couple of different video games as well as taking some personality measures. Participation is completely voluntary and you can stop at any time. You will be compensated for your time. Also, your participation is anonymous and you will never be asked to provide your name. Please note that you must be over 18 to participate in this survey.

If you would like to participate, please click here or go to the following link:

Volunteers are essential to the humanitarian services we provide our Statewide Communities and we welcome your interest!
Volunteers at the American Red Cross of Alaska share these common characteristics:
Opportunities abound whether your willing to be on call for local or state disaster response, provide CPR training to the community, or even by assisting your local office directly.

I was taking care of a disabled man for three years. His family cared very little about him until he passed away. The only thing he really cared about were the two Jack Russell dogs that kept him company during his illness.

Now his family cares a lot. A lot about his estate but not at all about his dogs. I am in need of someone in the Anchorage area that has a fenced yard that can care for these dogs until I can find them a permanent spot.

I can pay vet bills, dog food and a stipend of fifty dollars monthly.

I know this isn't exactly the correct area to post for this sort of thing but I am at my wits end with the flaggers on Craigslist.
