“Many times I tried to draw Creek Street, a boardwalk in Ketchikan lined with colorful old buildings, but couldn't figure out how to do it. There are no tall buildings one can climb to get a perspective of the entire street. Finally, I just walked the street, drawing every building and taking notes of the colors. Then, I pretended I was a bird looking down on the whole and started painting.
Back in the day, Creek Street had its share of brothels. The residents would brag that both the fish and fishermen would head upstream to spawn.”
“Rie Munoz (re moo nyos), a Dutch-American, was born and raised in California. Rie passed away in 2015. She lived in Alaska since 1951, when she traveled up the Inside Passage by steamship, fell in love with Juneau, and gave herself until the boat left the next day to find a job and a place to live. Since then Juneau had been home to Munoz.”
