“Trailmates”
a Stone Lithograph c.1948 by Fred Machetanz
by the late acclaimed Alaskan Artist
Fred Machetanz
(American, 1908-2002)
The work depicts a young musher dressed in a prized spotted fawnskin parka, standing with his leader by his side, contemplating not only the terrain but the aesthetic thrill from the spectacular display of the Northern Lights filling the sky.
Perhaps he is listening to see if he can hear them crackle "like frost breaking up in an empty house," as an elder in the village once described to him, or he might whistle to bring them closer, for he has heard it is possible to do that.
It is titled on the lower left,
marked Edition-100,
hand signed by Fred Machetanz in graphite on the lower right.
Professionally matted within a black frame (has a few dings to it)
measuring 20” tall x 16” wide
“As Alaska's preeminent artist,
Fred Machetanz (February 20, 1908 – October 6, 2002) traveled a long trail from his first one-man show in 1961.
He was an Alaskan painter and illustrator who specialized in depictions of Alaskan scenes, people and wildlife. His paintings and stone lithographs have been exhibited around the world. He pictured the Alaska he first encountered in the village of Unalakleet. It was there that he first established a bond with the land and its people that lasted nearly 50 years. He died in 2002 at age 94”
