Lucky for you our hiring process is in full swing for the 2018 summer season.
The Black Bear is a seasonal, independent coffee house, restaurant and bakery located ½ mile north of the entrance to Denali National Park in interior Alaska. Our season runs mid-May through mid-September when everyone takes their dream vacation to The Wilderness. We operate a counter service restaurant, serving brunch and dinner as well as local coffee, beer and wine. Sourcing proteins and produce locally, supporting local farmers and bringing the highest quality products to the table is very important to us. We seek individuals who love people, service, and craft. Students of life who share a sense of adventure and desire real community are our kind of folks.
We require that those in all positions have respectful communication skills, are able to be on one's feet all day in a very fast-paced environment, and work under extreme pressure. One must be able to take direction and continuing professional critique and grow with it.
The Alaska season is very short, therefore we seek those who can learn fast, process quickly and dive in. All hires must stay the duration of the season (through September 17). We want people who are fun to work with, have a good sense of humor, and who actually enjoy cultivating the Black Bear vibe together in their work. Position begins immediately.
We have very high standards when it comes to who represents the whole of what we are about. The face of our counter service establishment is the barista. Those who love the craft of coffee, and have the precision, care, and artistry to really deliver something consistently incredible are the kind of people we are interested in. Must have experience enjoying great customer service, and be able to communicate very effectively and respectfully. Our baristas are also our greeters, cashiers and food runners. Advanced training is provided if necessary. Experience with a POS: bonus.
Must be able to work under extreme pressure and communicate respectfully with a team in a fast-paced bar
Must be helpful, friendly, positive, genuinely love customer service and not be afraid to connect with strangers
Must have professional experience of at least one year crafting specialty coffee, texturing milk, dialing grinders, extracting perfect espresso and pouring beautiful cups of coffee
WHAT TO EXPECT:
The Black Bear is essentially a close-knit community of seasonal staff, coming together in a 4-month spurt of collective energy to fuel the gears of a true mom and pop shop in the middle of remote, wild beauty. You will be expected to jump in, learn fast and pick it up as you go. You will work as fast as you can some days, and be expected to keep busy when it is slower. You will be expected to bring your best self to the team and adapt to being a hard-working professional in the midst of adult summer camp. All responsible folks who care and work hard will be rewarded with compassion, respect, kindness and the joy of being a part of something that people truly love, that can stand behind the integrity of what it puts out.
